The Portuguese Army is the land warfare branch of the Portuguese Armed Forces, operating under the Ministry of National Defence. It is tasked with safeguarding national sovereignty, defending territorial integrity, and contributing to international peace and humanitarian missions under NATO, the UN, and the EU. Tracing its lineage back to the 12th-century Reconquista and the founding battles of the Kingdom of Portugal, it was formally reorganized as a permanent standing army in 1570.
