What it is
The Presidency of the Republic is the institution of the Head of State of Portugal, representing the nation and ensuring national independence, state unity, and the proper functioning of democratic institutions. Operating within a semi-presidential framework, the President serves as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and holds key constitutional powers, including appointing the Prime Minister, vetoing legislation, and dissolving parliament. Established following the 5 October 1910 revolution that abolished the constitutional monarchy, the office was restored to a democratic mandate under the 1976 Constitution following the Carnation Revolution.
